A Massachusetts firefighter wrestled away a knife from a suspect accused of stabbing three police officers Thursday.
The incident happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. when Saugus police went to a home concerning a rented U-Haul truck that had not been returned, WCVB-TV reports. At the home, Steven Sossong, 43, would not cooperate with police and accosted them from a window, according to the Boston Herald.
"Based on his level of cooperation, they made a forced entry where he refused to allow him to come in and speak to him regarding this vehicle," Assistant Chief Ron Giorgetti told WCVB. "Subsequently there was an altercation. Mr. Sossong had an edged weapon, a knife. Assaulted the officers on scene."
Saugus Lt. Greg Cinelli, who was part of the initial response to the home, was wearing heavy gloves and able to disarm Sossong, according to prosecutors. A fourth police officer was injured but not stabbed in the incident.
All four officers were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover, according to WCVB.
Sossong suffered minor injuries and also was taken to the hospital. A judge also ordered a 20-day mental health evaluation for him.
